Types of marine fender

Marine fenders are crucial components in port infrastructure for the protection of vessels and berthing structures. They come in various types, each designed for specific applications and conditions. Here are some common types of marine fenders:

  1. Cylindrical Fenders: These are one of the most commonly used types of marine fenders. They are simple in design and offer excellent energy absorption and low reaction force. They can be installed horizontally or vertically and are suitable for various vessel sizes.

  2. Pneumatic Fenders: Also known as air-filled fenders, these consist of an outer rubber layer and an inner air chamber. They provide high energy absorption and are often used for ship-to-ship transfers and as standalone fenders for small to large vessels.

  3. D-shaped Fenders: These fenders have a flat surface on one side, making them suitable for installations where space is limited, such as quays with restricted berthing areas.

  4. Cell Fenders: Cell fenders are characterized by their multiple hollow chambers arranged in a grid pattern. They offer high energy absorption and low reaction force, making them suitable for large vessels and areas with high berthing velocities.

  5. Arch Fenders: Arch fenders are shaped like an arch and are installed horizontally. They provide good shear resistance and are commonly used in docks and terminals with large tidal variations.

  6. Conical Fenders: These fenders have a conical shape and offer progressive resistance to compression. They are suitable for installations with variable berthing angles and can accommodate different vessel sizes.

  7. Super Cone Fenders: These are an enhanced version of conical fenders with a larger body diameter and a higher energy absorption capacity. They are used for berths with large tidal variations and frequent vessel movements.

  8. W Fenders: W fenders have a W-shaped cross-section and are suitable for installations where space is limited. They provide good shear resistance and are commonly used in small to medium-sized ports.

  9. Tugboat Fenders: These fenders are specifically designed to protect tugboats during pushing and towing operations. They are typically made of durable materials like rubber and are resistant to abrasion and impact.

  10. Foam Fenders: Foam fenders consist of closed-cell foam encased in a protective polyurethane elastomer skin. They offer lightweight and durable protection and are commonly used in offshore applications and areas with harsh environmental conditions.

These are just a few examples of the types of marine fenders available. The choice of fender type depends on factors such as vessel size, berthing velocity, tidal variations, and available space.
